Usain Bolt to race two weeks before Rio Olympics

China Athletics Worlds

Usain Bolt will compete at a Diamond League meet in London’s Olympic Stadium from July 22-23, two weeks before the Rio Olympic Opening Ceremony, according to the IAAF.

Bolt has competed in London three of the last four years, including sweeping the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the 2012 Olympics.

“I know the athletics fans in London are very knowledgeable and passionate about track and field and will come out in force and create a great atmosphere like they always do,” Bolt, who spends more time in Great Britain than anywhere outside of Jamaica, said in a press release. “I first competed in the London Grand Prix in 2005 when the event was in Crystal Palace. This will be my ninth time to compete in a city I know very well. There are a lot of Jamaicans living in the UK and I always get great support – it is like my home away from home.”

Bolt, 29, last competed at the World Championships in Beijing in August, sweeping the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay in what could be considered upsets over Justin Gatlin and the U.S.

He usually opens his seasons in Jamaican meets in the winter and is expected to ramp up toward a Jamaican Olympic trials, which would be before the London meet.
