Russia was dominant in the pairs short program for decades, but Vancouver served as a big disappointment, as the country failed to medal. The Russian team hopes for redemption in Sochi.

With that in mind, Tatyana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov rank as favorites, even with some recent struggles. Germans Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy took bronze in 2010 and bring in some hype of their own.

As far as the U.S. is concerned, Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir probably have the best chance to get on the podium, though the United States isn’t expected to win its first pairs short program medal since 1998. They’re joined by the duo of Felicia Zhang and Nate Bartholomay.
