For some time, there was some controversy when U.S. speed skating star Shani Davis didn’t participate in team pursuit events. Now it represents his chance at an Olympic medal in Sochi.

The U.S. has notched at least one speed skating medal in an Olympics since 1984. The U.S. women don’t have a great chance (wait for it: the Netherlands are in the way), yet a men’s group featuring Davis may have a better shot. Davis, 31, rounds out a U.S. team that also includes Brian Hansen, Jonathan Kuck and Joey Mantia.

One can assume that the Netherlands will be a contender in both events considering their recent domination of many disciplines.

Men’s team pursuit quarterfinals and semifinals take place today while their finals go Saturday; meanwhile, women’s quarterfinals are on friday while the semifinals and finals are on Saturday.
