After blowout wins over China and Venezuela, two teams they were quite familiar with due to a combined three games played in pre-Olympic exhibitions, the United States men’s basketball team should face a stiffer test Wednesday night. Australia will be the opponent, and like the Americans they’ve been quite impressive in two comfortable wins to open their Olympic competition.

The Boomers have multiple pros that the casual fan will recognize, including Andrew Bogut of the Dallas Mavericks, Patty Mills of the San Antonio Spurs and Matthew Dellavedova of the Milwaukee Bucks, but the roster is deeper than just those two men. Forward Cameron Bairstow, who struggled to get consistent minutes with the Chicago Bulls, has played well at the international level and big men such as Aron Baynes (an established NBA vet) and Brock Motum can play as well.

With Australia’s depth inside this will be a physical game in the post, something the Americans definitely have the tools to deal with. Unlike the United States’ first two games in Rio, there should be some suspense after halftime. And given how the teams have played and the talent at their respective coaches’ disposal, there’s a chance that these two teams could meet again with a lot more on the line later in these Olympics.
