Joel Embiid earns Eastern Conference Player of the Month

Sixers fans know that Joel Embiid is having an incredible month — heck, an incredible season — with plenty of dazzling plays and incredible stats.

On Friday, he received another honor for his hard work.

The NBA on Friday named Embiid the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for January after he posted 29.2 points 13.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

And he did it at a crucial time for the Sixers. January marked the beginning of a tough stretch of the Sixers' schedule, facing a run of teams likely bound for the playoffs. He posted 11 double-doubles and five 30-point games in January, including a 42-point performance against the Suns on Jan. 2, and four straight 30-point games from Jan. 15-23.

Through it all, Embiid helped lead the team to an 11-4 record in January that was punctuated on the last day with a big win in Oakland over the defending champion Warriors.

It's been quite a while since a Sixer has hauled in one of these awards. Embiid is one of only five Sixers to be named Eastern Conference Player of the Month, the first since Allen Iverson in April 2005.

An All-Star starter for the second straight season, Embiid’s name should be in the MVP conversation as well.
