Watch Sixers' Mike Scott square off against a fan in a footrace

Mike Scott squared off against Justin DiVirgilio Friday in a 100-meter footrace in South Philadelphia.

Why was a professional athlete taking on a fan in the middle of his offseason?

Scott had a pretty good explanation for NBC Sports Philadelphia's Marc Farzetta.

I was just on Twitter, talking my normal s--- like I do. Phillies game had a little rainout and I saw this guy rush the field and he got caught by the security. Me being me, I just tweeted, ‘If that would’ve been me, nobody would catch me.’ My guy Justin sent me a DM, said, ‘I’m the guy that caught him. We can set up a race.’ And here we are.

DiVirgilio, who hosts The Outlet Pass Podcast and writes for The Sixer Sense in addition to doing security for the Phillies, talked about his mindset heading into the race on the latest Sixers Talk Podcast with Danny Pommells and Amy Fadool.

“I’m a realist, but I can’t be going in tail between my legs like, ‘Oh, I’m going to lose, he’s an athlete.’ No, I want to race. You challenged me, I stepped up.”

You can check out the full podcast below for all the details on the improbable chain of events that led to the race. DiVirgilio joins at 34:20.

Give DiVirgilio credit — as you can see in the video above, Scott didn't just cruise to an easy win.

“I saw him in my rearview," Scott said. "I said, ‘Hell no, I can’t let that happen.’ Just put a little speed on him. Just a little bit.”

If DiVirgilio had pulled off the upset, Scott would have had to appear on his podcast — although, given Scott's love for any and all things Philly, you'd think that's still a possibility.

Since Scott came out on top, DiVirgilio owes him a Philly cheesesteak, Scott's first.
