WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Justin Pierce scored a career-high 33 points on 10-of-15 shooting and William & Mary broke away from Delaware in the second half for an 83-66 victory on Saturday.
Pierce's previous career high was 30 set against Elon on Feb. 1. Against the Blue Hens, he was 3 of 5 from beyond the 3-point arc and missed just 1 of 11 free throws. Nathan Knight added a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots and Matt Milon scored 13.
The Tribe (16-9, 9-5 Colonial Athletic Association) were strong on both ends shooting 28 of 56 from the field, distributing 20 assists, collecting 10 steals and blocking nine shots.
William & Mary led 47-39 at halftime and broke it open in the second half with an 11-2 run and led by double figures for the remainder.
Ryan Allen led Delaware (11-16, 4-10) with 25 points, Skye Johnson added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Eric Carter scored 12.
NEWARK, Del. — Kevin Anderson hit two free throws in the final seconds to preserve a slim Delaware advantage in a 76-75 win over Drexel on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (14-8, 6-3 Colonial Athletic Association) had a wide lead through most of the second half but Drexel rallied late, closing to 74-72 with 12 seconds to play. Anderson's free throws pushed it to 76-72 just before Drexel's Trevor John hit a 3-pointer for the final margin.
Ryan Allen led the scoring for Delaware with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting including four from distance. Ithiel Horton added 19 points and Anderson finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Eric Carter turned in a team-high 13 rebounds and five assists.
Delaware led 44-33 at the break and stretched it to 58-45 on a Collin Goss 3-pointer early in the second half. A Carter dunk had the Blue Hens leading 35-20 with 4:40 remaining before the Dragons (10-12, 4-5) began their rally.
Troy Harper scored 16 points and John finished with 15 for Drexel.
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Ryan Daly scored 23 points, Eric Carter added 20 and 11 rebounds and No. 7 seed Delaware held off 10th-seeded Elon 86-79 Saturday night in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
Delaware (14-18) will play No. 2 seed Northeastern (21-9) in a Sunday quarterfinal.
Dmitri Thompson scored 22 of his 27 points in the second half and pulled Elon to within 82-77 with his fourth 3-pointer with 37 seconds left. Thompson missed another trey eight seconds later and Delaware made 4 of 6 free throws to hold on.
The Blue Hens shot 57 percent for the game (59 in the second half) and outscored Elon 44-32 in the paint. Ryan Allen added 14 points and Anthony Mosely 13.
Tyler Seibring and Steven Santa Ana each scored 15 for Elon (14-18).
