10 fascinating Eagles roster trends

Eagles Insider

Who exactly are the 2020 Philadelphia Eagles?

Where did these 53 players come from and what's their background? How many were undrafted? How many came from other teams? How many played for Andy Reid? How many have been released at some point in their career?

We have answers!

Here's our annual breakdown of the Eagles' initial 53-man roster and how it came to be:

HOW MANY NEWCOMERS ARE THERE? The roster includes 13 new players - nine of 10 draft picks (all but Prince Tega-Wanogh0), plus veteran acquisitions Will Parks, Darius Slay, Nikell Robey-Coleman and Javon Hargrave. Some 29 of the 53 on the roster - more than half - joined the Eagles over the last two years. Only 17 remain from the Super Bowl team.

HOW MANY GUYS LEFT FROM THE BIG RED ERA? There are still four players on the roster who played under Andy Reid - Jason Peters, Brandon Graham, Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox but only two that came in during Chip Kelly’s tenure - Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz. There is nobody on the roster that joined the Eagles in 2014 or 2015.

HOW MANY UNDRAFTED PLAYERS? Twelve of the 53 players on the roster - 23 percent - were never drafted, including six who began their careers with the Eagles (Corey Clement, Cameron Johnston, Greg Ward, Craig James, T.J. Edwards, Nate Herbig).

WHICH UNDRAFTED ROOKIES MADE THE TEAM? This is the first time since 2008 that no undrafted rookies have made the opening-day roster … although that could conceivably change in the next couple days.

HOW MANY 1ST-ROUND PICKS? The Eagles have more 6th-round picks [9] than 1st-round picks [7]. There are also nine 2nd-round picks, four 3rd-round picks, five 4th-round picks, five 5th-round picks and three 7th-round picks. That means 29 of the 53 guys on the roster - well more than half - were drafted in the fifth round or later or were undrafted.

HOW EXPERIENCED IS THIS TEAM? Twenty of the 53 players on the roster have never started an NFL regular-season game and nine others have started five or fewer. That means 29 of the 53 have started five or fewer games in their careers.

WHO'S STARTED THE MOST CAREER GAMES? The most career starts on the roster: Jason Peters [195], DeSean Jackson [149], Jason Kelce [126], Fletcher Cox [119], Rodney McLeod [97], Alshon Jeffery and Darius Slay [94], Lane Johnson [93], Brandon Graham [86], Zach Ertz [71], Malik Jackson [67] and Carson Wentz [56].

WHAT DO JASON KELCE, LANE JOHNSON AND CARSON WENTZ HAVE IN COMMON? The only players on the roster who have never played a game they didn’t start are Kelce, Johnson and Wentz.

HOW MANY OF THE 53 WERE CUT AT ONE POINT? There are 12 players on the roster who have been waived at some point in their career (Nate Sudfeld, Boston Scott, Greg Ward, Jason Peters, Alex Singleton, Nate Gerry, Cre’Von LeBlanc, Craig James, Marcus Epps, Jake Elliott, Cameron Johnston and Rick Lovato).

HOW DID THESE 53 GUYS GET HERE? Of the 53 players on the roster, 27 were drafted by the Eagles, seven were acquired in trades, six were premium free agents (signed directly from other teams during the free agency period), nine were street free agents, two were signed off another team’s practice squad and two were waiver-wire pickups.
