Bosh Pritchard had been a pretty good player throughout his career, and in 1949 he even led the NFL in yards per carry playing for the NFL champions. But he missed the 1950 season with a knee injury. In 1951, Pritchard had negative two yards on 24 carries the first three weeks of the season. His average - minus-0.08 yards per carry - is the worst in NFL history by any player with 20 or more carries through three games. Pritchard finished the season - his final NFL season - with 29 yards on 42 carries.

Liske was the Eagles’ opening-day QB in 1971, and the North Jersey native and Penn State graduate somehow managed to throw two TDs and nine interceptions in his first three starts in an Eagles uniform while completing just 43 percent of his passes. His 34.9 passer rating after three weeks remains 18^th-lowest in NFL history, and he’s one of only nine QBs ever to throw nine INTs the first three weeks of any season. Only Ken Stabler and Jake Plummer have done it since 1971. Liske actually played well the rest of the year, with a passer rating over 98 in five of his last seven starts.

The Eagles selected Michael Haddix with the eighth pick in 1983 – ahead of people like Bruce Matthews, Dan Marino, Darrell Green, Joey Browner, Jim Kelly and Roger Craig. So they were determined to make him the centerpiece of the offense. Three games into his career, Haddix had 54 carries, 142 yards for a 2.6 average. That’s 14^th-worst in NFL history by a back with at least 50 carries. The thing is, that was the best stretch of Haddix’s career! He never had more than 120 yards again in any three-game stretch.

The Eagles had one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history, no running game and a young quarterback who wasn’t ready. So it’s no surprise that future NFL MVP Randall Cunningham struggled in his first three career starts. He completed 41 percent of his passes with one TD and 6 INTs, and his 34.1 passer rating is worst in Eagles history by any regular QB through three games and 19^th-lowest in the NFL since 1970.

The hapless Rich Kotite was determined to make former Chicago Bear Thomas Sanders the Eagles’ lead running back in 1991, and he had 44 carries for just 105 yards the first three games of the season. His 2.4 rushing average is 14^th-worst in NFL history by a back with 40-plus carries through three games and worst in Eagles history. Even Kotite was able to catch on that Sanders wasn’t working out, and the former Bear got just 10 carries the rest of his season (and career). His 2.3 average is worst in Eagles history by a back with a minimum of 50 carries.

Mike Mamula gets a bum rap around here, because he actually had a decent career, with 31 ½ sacks in five seasons. But he did get off to a historically bad start in 1997, with no sacks in his first eight games and just a half a sack through 10 games. When he had another half sack in Week 11, Ray Rhodes was asked by a beat guy at his presser how good it was to see Mamula break into single digits in sacks. Mamula finished strong with three sacks in the last four games.

Donovan McNabb’s 2003 season is different than the others because he bounced back and led the Eagles on a nine-game winning streak and eventually another NFC Championship Game. But his three-game passer rating of 51.1 is the second-worst of the last 20 years by a QB throwing at least 100 passes (Chris Simms had a 46.3 in 2006). McNabb remains the only QB in NFL history to open a season by throwing 100 or more passes with no TDs and lower than 50 percent completion percentage.

DeMarco Murray’s Eagles debut was not an auspicious one. In the 2015 opener against the Falcons, he ran 8 times for 9 yards. It got worse. A week later, against the Cowboys, he ran 13 times for 2 yards. His three-game total was 47 yards on 29 carries, and that 0.52 average is 2^nd-worst in NFL history through three games, behind only Bosh Pritchard, who preceded him with the Eagles by 70 years. A year earlier, Murray had led the NFL in rushing.

It’s almost impossible to play this much and not catch a pass. Mack Hollins did it last year, and so far history is repeating itself with JJAW, who has played 62 snaps so far. The last Eagle WR to play significant offensive snaps through three games without a catch was Na Brown in 1999. He did go on to catch 18 passes that year. Torrance Small (1 in 1999, 1 in 2000) and Hank Baskett (2 in 2006) were close.

Three games into his fifth season, Carson Wentz has a 63.9 passer rating, which isn’t only worst in the NFL, it’s 14^th-worst by any QB throwing at least 100 passes in the first three weeks over the last 20 years and 51^st-worst in NFL history. Wentz is the first Eagles QB to throw two INTs in each of the first three games since Sonny Jurgensen in 1962. Among 22 Eagles QBs in history with 100 or more attempts through three games, Wentz’s 63.9 rating is second-worst, behind only Donovan McNabb’s 51.1 in 2003.
