Carson Wentz reacts to possible Jadeveon Clowney signing

Would Carson Wentz welcome Jadeveon Clowney as a teammate?

Sure sounds like it.

Wentz, in an interview with John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia, for the first time indicated he doesn’t believe Clowney’s hit in the Seattle playoff game in January was a cheap shot.

He said he doesn’t hold any grudges toward the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, whose late hit in the first quarter ended Wentz’s season and effectively ended the Eagles’ season.

Clowney, who spent his first five NFL seasons in Houston and last year with the Seahawks, is currently a free agent, and the Eagles are among five teams reportedly interested in him.

Which creates a potentially awkward situation.

Would the Eagles really consider signing the guy who ended their season a few months ago with a hit that most fans agree was a cheap shot?

I wrote about this on Wednesday, and on Thursday, Wentz sure sounded like he would welcome Clowney if general manager Howie Roseman believed it was the right move.

“Listen, at the end of the day, I’ll trust Howie with that,” Wentz said Thursday. “That play happened, it is what it is. That’s football. It was an unfortunate way to end end season for me personally, but I have respect for Jadeveon, he’s a heck of a player.”

Clowney wasn’t flagged or fined for what appeared to be a blatant late hit and cheap shot. Wentz suffered a concussion and was replaced by 40-year-old Josh McCown, and the Eagles went on to lose, 17-9.

Wentz has missed the end of the last three seasons with injuries.

“I don’t think he had any ill will with that hit,” Wentz said. “That’s part of football. But he’s a heck of a player, so I trust Howie to make the right decisions to make our team the best we can be.”

The 27-year-old Clowney, the first pick in the 2014 draft, made the Pro Bowl after the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Texans. He has 32 sacks over the last five seasons.
