After watching Carson Wentz during the first four days of training camp, he seems to look like he did at this time last year, before the torn ACL.
Doug Pederson agrees.
“I think if you didn’t know he had the injury or had the brace on his leg, you’d probably assess that everything was good,” the head coach said.
Of course, Wentz is still going through his recovery process.
During Sunday's practice, Wentz did 7-on-7 drills, but did not participate in 11-on-11 drills after doing them the last two days. Before you start to freak out, it seems like the decision to hold him back today was made a while ago.
“It’s just the plan that we have,” Pederson said. “I’m not going to divulge the plan, but there’s a plan. There’s a progression. There are steps that we’re going to take with him. But this is all a part of that progression.”
Based on Pederson’s responses, here’s what we know about the plan:
- It’s done on a weekly basis, not daily
- They have Wentz on a “pitch count”
- His extra rehab work is factored into the plan
- The Eagles use technology (GPS trackers) to develop the plan
“Does that make sense?” Pederson asked. “I’m trying to make as much sense as I can so you don’t ask another question.”
It’s safe to say the head coach is tired of answering questions about Wentz’s recovery, but they’re not likely to stop anytime soon.
While Wentz might look completely healthy and returned to form to the naked eye, he isn’t all the way back just yet. The Eagles can tell that by using the GPS tracking and comparing it to a baseline of performance they established from Wentz during last year’s training camp. They look back at last year’s numbers as a goal for where Wentz needs to go.
“It’s a good plan and we’re going to stick with it,” Pederson said.
There are 38 days until the season opener against the Falcons. The Eagles are being cautious and sticking to their plan, but it certainly seems like No. 11 will be ready.
