Eagles add some slot corner insurance to practice squad

Share

The Eagles on Monday signed cornerback De’Vante Bausby to their practice squad and I’m surprised it took this long.

You’ll probably remember back in the spring, when the Eagles liked Bausby enough to give him first-team reps as their slot cornerback. Eventually, he lost that short-lived role as a starter and was passed by Sidney Jones and Avonte Maddox on the depth chart.

But I couldn’t help but think of Bausby when the Eagles signed Dexter McDougle off the street a few weeks ago. McDougle has been the Eagles slot corner recently as Jones (hamstring) has been out and Maddox has taken over for Rodney McLeod at safety.

I really thought about Bausby while watching McDougle struggle to just stay on his feet against the Jaguars in London. It seems a little curious they went that route instead of a guy who just a few months ago was taking first-team reps at that spot.

The Eagles are obviously hoping Jones will be back soon to his nickel corner spot back, but maybe having Bausby around is some insurance if McDougle needs to play and can’t get the job done.

Bausby was somewhat of a surprise final cut after training camp and then he lasted just one week on the practice squad before the Eagles cut him. Now, he’s back and he might be a better option than the guy who has been holding down that job.

Here’s an updated look at the Eagles’ 10-man practice squad:
