Eagles

Throughout July, we’re unveiling our all-time Eagles team.

We enlisted the help of Eagles reporters Reuben Frank and Dave Zangaro, Quick Slants hosts Derrick Gunn and Barrett Brooks and Quick Slants producer Mike Mulhern to handle the voting.

Each voter ranked his top five players at 16 different positions. A first-place vote was worth five points, a second-place vote was worth four, and so on.

Up today: Outside linebackers

Complete voting:

1. Seth Joyner = 25
2. William Thomas = 18
3. Maxie Baughan = 11
4. Connor Barwin = 5
4. Carlos Emmons = 5
6. John Bunting = 4
6. Frank LeMaster = 4

The breakdown: Seth Joyner, like long-time teammate Reggie White, is a unanimous choice for the top spot, and William Thomas is next, with three second-place votes and two third-place votes. Maxie Baughan got the two other second-place votes and a third-place vote but wasn’t listed at all on two ballots. John Bunting and Carlos Emmons got the two other third-place votes.

Did we get it right? Joyner was the greatest outside linebacker of his generation and should be a Hall of Famer, so he’s definitely in the right place. Willie T. was a very good player, but Maxie Baughan was a nine-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, with five of those Pro Bowls coming with the Eagles and four with the Rams. Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik is the only linebacker in franchise history who made more Pro Bowls than Baughan. Willie T. was a very productive pure outside linebacker who finished his career with 37 sacks and 27 interceptions (33 and 18 as an Eagle) and made two Pro Bowls. But Baughan should have been second.
