Eagles bringing back 10 players from their 2020 practice squad

The Eagles on Monday afternoon made several roster moves, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with defensive tackle T.Y. McGill and reaching terms on futures contracts with nine others.

Here are the nine others: WR Deontay Burnett, TE Hakeem Butler, S Blake Countess, DT Treyvon Hester, CB Lavert Hill, RB Elijah Holyfield, CB Jameson Houston, DE Matt Leo, DE Joe Ostman.

It’s pretty typical of teams to sign their practice squad guys after the end of a season and that’s what the Eagles did here. The only practice squad players they didn’t sign to futures deals on Monday were Prince Tega Wanogho, Jordan Howard, Casey Tucker and Adrian Killins Jr. We’ll see if they sign them in the coming days.

Here’s a look at the 10 players they agreed to terms with on Monday:

DT T.Y. McGill: The 28-year-old is a vested veteran so he gets a regular one-year deal and not a futures contract. McGill picked up a neutral zone infraction on Sunday night that was a huge penalty to help Washington seal that win, so go ahead and insert your joke about McGill tanking his way to a contract here.

McGill actually ended up playing in seven games for the Eagles this season. He finished with 9 tackles, half a sack and 3 QB hits. He might figure into the DT rotation as a depth piece in 2021.

WR Deontay Burnett: The 23-year-old former USC receiver had a tremendous training camp but didn’t make the Eagles’ roster. He ended up playing in just two games this season. He had 3 catches on 4 targets for 19 yards. He played a total of 58 snaps.

TE Hakeem Butler: The Eagles decided to keep around Butler as a project. The former fourth-round receiver played just one snap all season and it was that ill-fated fade against the Giants back in October.

S Blake Countess: The Eagles drafted Countess in the sixth round back in 2016 but this year was actually his third separate stint with the Eagles. He finally got some action on Sunday night, playing six defensive snaps.

DT Treyvon Hester: The Eagles quietly brought back the double-doink hero in November but he was never called up.

CB Lavert Hill: The Eagles signed the former Michigan corner to the practice squad on Dec. 8. He’ll at least have a chance to compete this spring and summer.

RB Elijah Holyfield: The Eagles liked Holyfield enough to bring him in at the tail end of the 2019 season but the former Georgia running back didn’t get any game action in 2020.

CB Jameson Houston: Houston didn’t arrive to the practice squad until Nov. 25 but he ended up playing in three games this year. The undrafted DB from Baylor played a total of 22 defensive snaps this year.

DE Matt Leo: Leo is the giant defensive end from Australia who has been with the Eagles as a part of the NFL’s international pathway program. He was a roster exempt player in 2020.

DE Joe Ostman: The Eagles’ Ed Block Courage Award winner is sticking around for a while longer. Ostman played in three games this year, totaling 29 defensive snaps and 42 special teams snaps.
