Eagles fill out roster by signing tight end Alex Ellis off their practice squad

The Eagles signed tight end Alex Ellis off their practice squad Friday afternoon, filling a roster spot that’s been vacant all week.

The Eagles had just two tight ends on the active roster — Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert — and head coach Doug Pederson indicated on Monday that the plan would likely be to sign one of the two practice squad tight ends — Ellis and Josh Perkins — to the 53-man roster to fill that vacancy.

The roster spot has been open since the Eagles placed cornerback Cre’Von LeBlanc on Injured Reserve with a foot sprain. Because LeBlanc went on IR after final cuts, he's eligible to return to practice in six weeks and return to action in eight weeks as one of the Eagles' short-term IR players.

Even though Perkins is more experienced than Ellis — he’s played in 17 NFL games, including nine with the Eagles last year, and has eight career catches for 109 yards and a touchdown — Ellis had the more impressive training camp.

Ellis has spent time with the Titans, Jaguars, Saints and Chiefs and has three receptions for 11 yards in eight games. His last NFL catch came in December 2016 with the Jaguars from Blake Bortles.

Ellis is a native of Southern Delaware and went to high school at Delmar, which is two blocks north of the Maryland border.

Ellis and Perkins are both 26.
