Hurts questionable but trending in right direction

Jalen Hurts is officially questionable for Sunday’s game against Washington but it seems like there’s a good chance he plays.

At least that was the impression from head coach Nick Sirianni on Friday.

Hurts was a full participant in Friday’s practice, which means he had to take his full complement of reps.

“He’s trending in the right direction and we’re hopeful,” Sirianni said.

Hurts injured his ankle against the Giants and even though he finished that game, he missed the following week against the Jets. The bye week came at a good time and Hurts stayed in town and continued to get treatment.

If Hurts isn’t able to go on Sunday, the Eagles would turn to Gardner Minshew, who played well in the win over the Jets before the bye. Hurts and Minshew split reps in Wednesday’s walkthrough to begin the week of practice.

Hurts on Wednesday said he was doing everything in his power, “trying to be available” for Sunday’s game.

In addition to practice reps, Sirianni said Hurts looked good in a workout before Friday’s practice.

“I feel pretty confident and feel pretty good with where he’s at right now,” he said.

Sirianni admitted he’d like to know who will start as soon as possible but acknowledged that’s not always the way this works out. So Hurts will be listed as questionable and, gamesmanship or not, we’ll have to wait for the definitive answer about this week’s starting quarterback.

There are a lot of factors that go into this decision but ultimately it comes down to this:

“We always want to do what’s best for the player first and then the team,” Sirianni said. “If he’s going, then it’s because he’s healthy enough to go.”

Aside from Hurts, two other key players will be playing on Sunday. Miles Sanders (ankle) and Jordan Howard (knee) will be good to go.

Sanders has been dealing with a lingering ankle injury and Howard hasn’t played since injuring his knee against the Saints. The bye week came at a good time for both.

“They’re ready to roll,” Sirianni said, “and excited to have them both back on the field to lead our rushing attack.”
