Eagles' Mack Hollins reportedly had offseason sports hernia surgery

Mack Hollins had a pretty disappointing training camp this summer, but at least we now might have a reason why.

Apparently, Hollins had offseason sports hernia surgery, NFL reporter Adam Caplan said on Inside The Birds podcast.

That makes some sense.

Despite working as a starter throughout training camp, thanks to Alshon Jeffery’s being on PUP, Hollins hasn’t made much of an impact. In the first preseason game, he played 21 snaps without a catch and was targeted just once.

From then, he missed practice on Aug. 11 and the next three days after. He also missed the game for an undisclosed reason. Hollins finally returned to practice this past Sunday.

It’s unclear if Hollins missed those practices and the game because of lingering effects from the surgery and at this time of year, injury information is hard to come by.

But earlier today, head coach Doug Pederson said “the rest that [Hollins has] been getting has really helped him.”

Pederson seemed unsure if Hollins will play on Thursday night against the Browns.

“So hopefully this week, we'll see where he's at,” Pederson said. “He practiced a little bit yesterday and got out there and did some nice things.

“So he's progressing and we'll see where he's at after today and then make a decision if even Mack is going to be available because he's another one that, he's a big part of our special teams units and I want to make sure going forward that he's also 100 percent to start the season.”

Last season, after he was drafted in the fourth round, Hollins caught 16 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown. He played 25 percent of the Eagles’ offensive snaps.

It seemed like he was due for a big sophomore season — the Eagles even hired his former position coach to take over as their receivers coach — but this at least helps to explain the lack of production this summer.
