Eagles name team captains for 2019 season

The Eagles voted Monday and on Thursday morning announced their captains for the 2019 season.

They’re the same from 2018:

Carson Wentz
Jason Kelce
Malcolm Jenkins
Fletcher Cox
Kamu Grugier-Hill

Each year, the Eagles pick two offensive, two defensive and one special teams captain. These five will wear a “C” on their right chests with filled in stars to denote how many times they’ve been named a captain. This is the third time for Wentz and Jenkins and the second for the other three. So Wentz and Jenkins will have three of four yellow stars filled in under their “C” this season.

Doug Pederson will name a sixth rotating captain for each game this season.

I’m excited for these guys, because this is voted on by the players,” Pederson said to the Eagles’ website. “This is not hand-selected by me. This is who the team selected. They view these guys, as do I, in high regard.

“The role of a captain is to show leadership on and off the football field. The obvious role, from a public standpoint, is to represent the team for the opening coin toss. It’s also the team’s leadership group and they are the ones that are leading the charge, so to speak, not only during the week, but on game day. We have a veteran group here that has been together for some time, and I know they’re going to do a great job.

Grugier-Hill’s role in the defense has grown this year, so he was curious about whether or not he’d be a special teams captain again, but the Eagles don’t have many other options. And even with his expanded role on defense, he still figures in heavily to special teams.

It’s also important to note that players vote on these captains, so following a season after which Wentz admitted he needed to work on his leadership, he was voted a team captain yet again.
