Eagles

The Eagles have placed veteran receiver Alshon Jeffery on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list as he returns from a Lisfranc injury that ended his 2019 season early.

While on the Active/PUP list, Jeffery cannot practice but he still counts against the Eagles’ roster limit during training camp. If at any time during training camp Jeffery is able to practice, he can be removed from the list.

But what this really does is open the door for Jeffery to begin the 2020 season on the Reserve/PUP list, with which you’re probably more familiar. He had to be on the Active/PUP to make it to the Reserve/PUP.

If Jeffery begins the season on Reserve/PUP, it would mean he’d miss at least the first six weeks of the 2020 season but wouldn’t take up a 53-man roster spot. That seems possible given the severity of Lisfranc injuries.

After the first six weeks, NFL teams have a five-week window to allow players on the PUP list to start practicing. Once the player starts practicing, there’s a three-week window to either activate that player or shut them down for the entire season.

Jeffery, 30, is coming off a disappointing and shortened season. In 2019, he caught 43 passes for 490 yards and 4 touchdowns. In 2020, he has a base salary of $9.9 million and a cap hit of over $15 million after the Eagles’ decision to guarantee his contract for the 2020 season. That was a mistake but now they’re stuck with him this year.

But the Eagles have been consistently saying that Jeffery is in their plans for 2020. It seems like anything they get out of him would be almost like a bonus.

Head coach Doug Pederson on Monday said Jeffery was doing “extremely well.”

“He’s in a really good spot,” Pederson said. “He’s going to continue to work and get himself ready. Obviously, I won’t put timetables on players, but when he’s ready, he’s ready and he’ll be back out there on the field with us.”
