Eagles sign veteran offensive guard off Chicago's practice squad

After a game in which the Eagles gave up eight sacks, the front office is bringing in a veteran offensive guard.

The Eagles on Tuesday afternoon announced that they are signing veteran Jamon Brown off the Bears’ practice squad. This news comes after they already promoted Sua Opeta from their own practice squad earlier in the day.

The Eagles had two roster spots available after putting Vinny Curry and Craig James on IR and they used both of them on guards. Even though Doug Pederson made it seem like Nate Herbig is the starter going forward, that position seems unsettled.

Brown, 27, was a third-round pick in 2015. He has played in 60 NFL games with 47 starts.

The Eagles are Brown’s fifth team in three years.

Brown (6-4, 340) began his career with the St. Louis Rams after they drafted him out of Louisville. Brown spent 2015-18 with the Rams before getting waived during the 2018 season. He then spent time with the Giants in 2018 and Falcons in 2019.

Last season, Brown was with the Falcons. He played in 10 games with nine starts but was released this August. He joined the Bears’ practice squad on Sept. 6.

Overall, Brown was ranked as the 94th-best guard in the NFL last season, according to ProFootballFocus. If he ends up playing right guard, he’d take over for Brandon Brooks, who was ranked first last year.

In 2019, Brown gave up 5 QB hits, 14 hurries and 19 pressures.

The Eagles initially brought back Jason Peters to play right guard in 2020 but eventually moved him back to left tackle to fill in for Andre Dillard, who was lost for the season.

In the opener, the Eagles played Herbig over Matt Pryor. So going into Week 2, the Eagles will have to choose from Herbig, Pryor, Opeta and now Brown. This right guard position could be a revolving door until the Eagles get it figured out.
