New York Giants left tackle Nate Solder has opted out of the 2020 season.
Here’s Solder’s complete statement on Twitter:
Solder, a cancer surviver himself, made this decision as his son battles cancer and as he has a few-month-old baby at home. So it totally makes sense that Solder opted out for this upcoming season during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But this does mean the Giants will be without their 32-year-old starting left tackle in 2020.
No, Solder hasn’t been great; he allowed 56 pressures and 11 sacks in 2019. And he’s certainly overpaid after signing a four-year, $62 million contract before the 2018 season. But he’s a veteran and now the Giants will have to rely on young players.
In April’s draft, the Giants used the No. 4 overall pick on Andrew Thomas out of Georgia and then used a third-round pick (No. 99) on Matt Peart out of UConn. So there’s a chance the Giants will be starting two rookie offensive tackles in 2020. The early guess is that Thomas starts on the left side in place of Solder. The Giants also have Cameron Fleming and Nick Gates who might compete to start.

According to ProFootballTalk’s opt-out tracker, Solder is the 5th player in the NFC East to opt out:
Nate Solder, OT, Giants
Maurice Canady, CB, Cowboys
Caleb Brantley, DL, Washington
Stephen Guidry, WR, Cowboys
Marquise Goodwin, WR, Eagles
