Golden Tate is still learning, but he knows you hate the Cowboys

Less than a week into his time with the Eagles, Golden Tate still has a lot to learn.

On Monday, Tate couldn’t quite remember the name of the Eagles’ stadium, where he’ll be playing his first game Sunday night. He knew it had the word “financial” in it. And he knew his new quarterback, Carson Wentz, was from one of the Dakotas, but he couldn’t quite remember which one.

At least he already knows how much Eagles fans hate the Cowboys.

“I’ve read my social media, so our fans have expressed the passionate dislike of the Cowboys,” Tate said. “It’s going to be a great game. I’m happy that my first game gets to be at home against such a intense opponent.”

Yeah, he’s off to a good start in Philly.

If there’s one way to endear yourself to the locals, it’s to hate Dallas.

Of course, the biggest thing he has to learn is the Eagles’ playbook. He’s already been diving in there pretty deep. While offensive coordinator Mike Groh said there’s a balance to teaching a player a new offense, the Eagles need to get Tate caught up quickly. There’s an important division game against those hated Cowboys on Sunday night at that Financial stadium where the Eagles play.

That’s why, when Wentz invited Tate to go to church Sunday, Tate stayed home and studied his playbook. Tate’s wife took the Wentz family up on their invitation.

Tate said Wentz was one of the first people to text him after the trade went through. But as Tate arrived to Philly, Wentz was back in one of the Dakotas (North) for some bye week relaxation. Tate wanted to ask him a ton of questions, but decided they could wait until this week. Tate said Monday, when he finally got to hang out with his teammates, was like Christmas Day.

There are some familiar faces in the Eagles’ locker room. He’s played with guys like Michael Bennett, Chris Maragos and Haloti Ngata before. Tate already knew Nelson Agholor and Jordan Matthews. But he also said everyone has been helping him to learn the offense.

The big question is about how the Eagles are going to use Tate in their offense. He was asked if he had any idea.

“I don’t,” Tate said. “But I do know one thing: I’m wanted here and they went and got me, so feeling appreciated is definitely good. Whatever they ask me to do. Again, I’m not expecting anyone to change their offense or really cater to me. Wherever I fit in, I want to do it the best I possibly can. Whatever it may be. We’ve got a bunch of really good players, specifically in our room that I’ve gotten to spend a little time with and it’s going to be fun.”

For Tate, in his No. 19 Eagles jersey, it all starts on Sunday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys. And Tate already knows you don’t like them. He passed the first test.
