Herm Edwards tests positive for COVID-19, still has a message for Eagles

Former Eagles cornerback and current Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards tested positive for COVID-19, the school announced Friday.

The Sun Devils canceled their game vs. California scheduled for Saturday. They could not dress the minimum number of scholarship players because of coronavirus.

Through Arizona State's website, Edwards released a statement stating his family is fine and that he "will be back quicker than you can say Forks Up!" He added, "even with the marvelous care our medical professionals have provided for myself, my staff and my team over the past few months the virus still found me. So, I encourage all of you to take this virus seriously, to wear a mask, practice physical distancing and get tested whenever possible."

Edwards, who played nine seasons with the Eagles, is most popular in the Philadelphia area for his scoop and score against the Giants back in 1978 famously dubbed "The Miracle at the Meadowlands."

For those needing a refresher, the Giants opted to run a play instead of kneeling on the ball with under 30 seconds remaining in the game. New York quarterback Joe Pisarcik and running back Larry Csonka were clearly not on the same page as Pisarcik fumbled the ball, leading to Edwards picking it up and rumbling 26 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

So as the Eagles get set to head up the Jersey Turnpike to take on the Giants this Sunday, we here at NBC Sports Philadelphia, led by producer Mike Mulhern, reached out to the Sun Devils' athletic department earlier in the week to see if Herm would like to lend his voice for the Eagles Pregame Live show open.

On Thursday, Edwards accepted the request and took it one step further by dusting off his TV skills from his analyst days and had the Sun Devils video department shoot his part of the script on camera.

Once Mulhern learned of Edwards' positive COVID-19 test on Friday he reached back out to Arizona State to see if the idea should be pulled. Not only did the Sun Devils say Herm wanted to go forth with the open, it added that Herm says the Eagles must "kick butt for him."

So, coach, we thank you for your time and wish you a very healthy and speedy recovery.

And by the way, Birds, kick the Giants' butt because Herm said so.
