How did Sirianni react to Minshew's desire to start?

After he beat the Jets last month, Gardner Minshew approached Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and asked what he had to do to win the starting quarterback job.

Sirianni wouldn’t comment on the report, but it’s clear what his answer was.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen first reported the exchange between Minshew and Sirianni, which took place in Sirianni’s office a day or two after Minshew completed 20 of 25 passes for 242 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions in the Eagles’ 33-18 win over the Jets in late December.

Hurts missed the Jets game with an ankle injury but after the bye week returned to win three straight games as the Eagles improved to 9-7 and clinched a playoff berth. Minshew has not played since the Jets game.

“I don't want to report anything or talk about any conversations that I had with any player in my office,” Sirianni said Thursday. “That's a conversation between myself and that player.

“But I will say about Gardner, he is a competitor. He is locked in, whether he's the backup, whether he's playing. The guy is going to prepare like crazy, no matter what the situation, and he's competitive.

“Of course, every backup that we have on this team, if they didn't want to be the starter, I would have an issue with them being the backup.”

The Eagles acquired Minshew from the Jaguars to replace Nick Mullens as the No. 3 quarterback, and then Minshew moved up to No. 2 when Joe Flacco was shipped to the Jets on Oct. 25.

Minshew, 25, is 8-13 in his career in 21 starts but has thrown 39 touchdowns and just 11 touchdowns. The Eagles control his rights for one more year on his rookie deal. The Eagles are 8-7 under Hurts this year, and he’s now 9-10 in his career, including four starts last year.

“Gardner has played a lot of football in this league,” Sirianni said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in him. ... We always talk about wanting your backup quarterback to be able to come in and function and give you a chance to win. And we saw that. He was awesome in the game that he played against the Jets. And so I would be disappointed if Gardner didn't want to be the starter.”

But ...

“But obviously Jalen is our starter.”
