Howie Roseman continued making the radio rounds Tuesday doing damage control after the Jalen Hurts fallout.
One of the main themes of his interviews has been that if Hurts makes plays to help the Eagles win games, the pick was worth it.
He even referenced Golden Tate of all people to make his point:
We traded a third for Golden Tate and we ended up getting a 4th-round comp pick back, but if you had told me we had traded a 3rd-round pick for Golden Tate and he’s going to help us win a playoff game, if you said it to me right now: ‘You can trade a 3rd-round pick to win a playoff game?’ I would do that. I would do whatever it takes to try to win as many games as possible and get a championship parade for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Tate only played 10 games in an Eagles uniform after his midseason trade from the Lions in 2018, but his fourth-down, last-minute touchdown catch from Nick Foles at Soldier Field gave the Eagles a dramatic comeback win over the Bears and sent them to the conference semifinal round in New Orleans.
The Eagles drafted the Oklahoma quarterback with the 53rd pick Thursday night even though players such as A.J. Epenesa, Denzel Mims, Kristian Fulton and Van Jefferson were on the board.
Unlike draft night, Roseman over the past couple days has been open about the pick being linked to Wentz’s injury history.
He pointed out how A.J. Feeley won four games in 2002 with Donovan McNabb out and helped the Eagles get home-field advantage, how Jeff Garcia went 6-1 down the stretch and won a playoff game in 2006, how Michael Vick replaced injured Kevin Kolb in 2010 and got the Eagles to the playoffs, how Foles replaced Vick in 2013 and got the Eagles to the playoffs and then all the postseason magic Foles spun in his second stint here.
“We’re not looking for Carson’s replacement,” Roseman said on 94 WIP with John Marks and Ike Reese Monday. “I hope Carson plays till he’s 40, 42 years old. We just feel like this is the most important position in sports and we think this player has something to him. … Someone said this to me that’s a successful money manager or stock guy or something, and they said when you hedge on something it’s always expensive and everyone always complains about hedging or buying insurance until they need it.”
Hurts is certainly a uniquely talented player.
Combining his years at Alabama and Oklahoma, he went 40-3 as a starting quarterback with 80 touchdowns, 20 interceptions, 65 percent completion percentage, nearly 10,000 passing yards and more than 3,000 rushing yards.
Roseman won’t say how, but he’s convinced the 21-year-old Texan will help the Eagles win a lot of football games one way or another.
This is my thought process: I’ve got to do everything I can to make sure Carson Wentz is standing on that podium, holding that trophy,” Roseman said Tuesday on the WIP Morning Show. “And it’s funny, when I say that, I see it, man. I see it. I see him doing that. I really do. And I really believe that’s going to happen. But I’ve also got to make sure that this organization is protected, that our fans are protected, that his teammates are protected.
