Is it possible that the 2019 Eagles are too talented on offense?

Share

There are so many weapons in this Eagles offense it’s crazy. They're loaded. They're going to put a ton of pressure on opposing defenses.

This much talent also puts a ton of pressure on the guy calling the plays and the guy throwing the ball.

Because it’s their job to keep everyone happy.

It’s a very real challenge that Doug Pederson has pondered to the point that he’s spoken to all of his offensive skill guys about the importance of putting team goals first.

Easier said than done sometimes.

Alshon Jeffery has averaged nearly 70 catches since becoming a full-time starter with the Bears in 2013. Nelson Agholor has averaged 63 catches the last two years after reviving his career. DeSean Jackson has averaged 57 catches in the nine seasons he’s played at least 12 games.

Zach Ertz? All he did was set an NFL record for tight ends with 116 receptions last year.

The whole world saw in the Super Bowl what kind of receiver Corey Clement is, the Eagles have said they want to get Dallas Goedert involved more and then there’s Darren Sproles, JJ Arcega-Whiteside and a couple running backs who the Eagles want to get involved in the passing game.

And last we counted, there’s one football.

Now keep them all happy.

I feel like coming into the league, that is something that’s come natural,” Carson Wentz said. “At least I don’t feel like I’ve ever played favorites, I just go where the defense tells me to go type of thing and I feel like we’ve always kind of spread the love and shared the love over the years, and so I’m not really too concerned about that.

This is really where Pederson is at his best.

One of the keys to the 2017 season was his ability to keep LeGarrette Blount and Jay Ajayi both happy without either one ever complaining about sharing the ball or not getting enough carries.

It’s a message he’s constantly preaching: It doesn’t matter who makes the play as long as somebody makes the play.

The guys that have been here understand how it works,” Pederson said. “The guys that we've added will catch up quickly. And I don't think you necessarily have to go into a game saying, you know, ‘Alshon has got to get this or DeSean has got to get this or Zach has got to get this. The ball's going to go where the ball is going to go and that's based on the play design and the progression and what the defense presents.

The Eagles haven’t had a 1,000-yard running back or 1,000-yard wide receiver since Pederson got here and they probably won’t this year.

When you play for the Eagles, you better be ready to supress your ego and not worry about stats.

Which is not an easy thing to do when long-term contracts, incentive bonuses and postseason awards are at stake.

The payoff? You have a good chance to win a lot of games. Maybe take a ride in a float.

One of the things that makes it a lot of fun to come to work every day is really all these guys want to do is win,” offensive coordinator Mike Groh said. “They understand that by having a lot of good players it makes you hard to defend and that they might have to share the football.

It starts with Howie Roseman bringing in guys who are unselfish.

And that may sound easy, but we all know how wide receivers are. Good luck trying to build a wide receiving corps out of guys who are talented but also understand that the ball just might not come their way sometimes and are OK with that.

That’s tough, but the Eagles feel like they’ve done it.

The coaches do a tremendous job of making sure that that takes place, that we are getting guys touches and doing their job, making sure those things happen, so I’m not overly worried about it,” Wentz said. “Obviously, we’re all cognizant of it … ‘Hey, we want to get Alshon going early this game, we want to get Ertz going,’ whatever it may be. I know at the end of the day everyone will get theirs, and I believe at the same time everyone’s personalities will allow us, if they’re not getting the ball for three quarters, no one’s going to be complaining on the sideline. I think we’re going to be in this thing together and I think we’re pretty good with where we’re at.

Bottom line: These guys might not be Fantasy Football studs, but they’re going to be pretty dangerous at the real thing.
