Eagles and Jordan Howard are giving it another shot

The Eagles and Jordan Howard are giving it another try, agreeing to a one-year deal to bring back Howard for the 2021 season.

Howard, 26, was waived by the Dolphins during last season and re-joined the Eagles as a practice squad member in November. Howard played in two games last year and had seven carries for 27 yards.

While this appears to be a curious signing because of Howard’s decline in recent seasons, he doesn’t even turn 27 until November and it’s unlikely the Eagles will have to pay him very much. And if Howard can get back to the level he played at early in 2018, he’s a nice complement to Miles Sanders.

In addition to bringing back Howard on Wednesday, the Eagles also agreed to terms with linebacker Eric Wilson from Minnesota.

Howard will now re-join a running back room that still includes Sanders and Boston Scott. And with 11 picks in the upcoming draft, the Eagles might still add another.

It’s hard to tell what the Eagles will get out of Howard. He has had a really weird career.

The Bears drafted him in the fifth round out of Indiana back in 2016 and Howard was a Pro Bowler as a rookie, rushing for over 1,300 yards. In fact, over his first three NFL seasons, Howard was the third-leading rusher in the NFL.

But it looked like the Bears were already seeing a gradual decline and they shipped Howard to the Eagles in 2019 for a sixth-round pick. Howard actually played really well for the Eagles early in 2019, averaging 4.4 yards per game. But he suffered a stinger and basically missed the rest of the year as Sanders took over as the lead back.

After his contract was up, Howard signed a two-year, $9.75 million contract with the Dolphins and played just five games in Miami before he was released.

Here’s an update of the Eagles’ signings in free agency: S Anthony Harris, QB Joe Flacco, S Andrew Adams, DT Hassan Ridgeway, LB Eric Wilson, RB Jordan Howard.

The Eagles also brought back their three exclusive rights free agents: Greg Ward Jr., Boston Scott and Alex Singleton.
