Latest compensatory pick projection doesn't look good for Eagles

The Eagles are projected to get just one compensatory pick for the 2021 draft, according to OverTheCap.

While the Eagles were in line to receive three compensatory picks, OTC projects that two of those picks will fall outside the top 32. Each season, the NFL awards just 32 total compensatory picks for teams based on players lost and gained during free agency.

So ultimately, OTC thinks the Eagles will receive a 6th-round pick for losing Jordan Howard but will not receive a 6th-rounder for losing Ronald Darby or a 7th-rounder for losing Kamu Grugier-Hill.

According to their comp pick cancellation chart, the Eagles’ signing of Javon Hargrave canceled out the loss of Halapoulivaati Vaitai.

So here’s an updated look at projected Eagles draft picks in 2021:

Round 1: Own pick

Round 2: Own pick

Round 3: Own pick

Round 5: Own pick

Round 5: Cowboys' pick

Round 6: Own pick

Round 6: Comp pick

Round 7: Own pick

Remember, the Eagles do not have a fourth-round pick this year thanks to that Genard Avery trade during the 2019 season. And they picked up a fifth-round pick from the Cowboys during the 2020 draft. The Eagles traded pick No. 146 (fourth round) for a fifth-round pick during the 2020 draft and a 2021 fifth-round pick.

While OTC is normally pretty accurate with these projections, there’s a chance they could be off slightly this year; it’s a chance they say is likely based on changes to the NFL’s formula. And it’s worth noting that OTC projects the Darby comp pick as the 33rd, so it just missed the cut.

Last year, the Eagles picked up three compensatory picks (a 3rd and two 4ths) and entered the draft with a total of 10 picks. Since 1994, the Eagles have been awarded 35 compensatory picks.

Here’s what the NFL says about how comp picks are determined:

“Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. No club may receive more than four compensatory picks in any one year. If a club qualifies for more than four compensatory picks after offsetting each CFA lost by each CFA gained of an equal or higher value, the four highest remaining selections will be awarded to the club.”

The NFL will announce 2021 compensatory picks later this offseason.
