Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett will be turning himself in to Houston police Monday, his attorney Rusty Hardin confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia Sunday night.
Bennett on Friday was indicted by a Harris County, Texas, grand jury for a felony charge of "injury to the elderly, included intentionally and knowingly, causing bodily injury to a person 65 years or older" and there is a warrant out for his arrest.
Hardin told USA Today that Bennett has been out of the country. Hardin also expressed that he was "concerned about the rhetoric" Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo displayed during a news conference Friday. During that news conference, Acevedo called Bennett "morally bankrupt."
"My initial reaction is that everyone needs to calm down a little bit," Hardin said to USA Today. "He's a professional football player who is very respected for his work on social issues. I'm going to take my time to find out what occurred."
Bennett is accused of injuring a 66-year-old paraplegic woman who was working at NRG Stadium in Houston during Super Bowl LI. He faces a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
A league source told NBC Sports Philadelphia's Derrick Gunn that neither the Eagles nor the Seahawks knew about the incident before Bennett's trade to the Eagles.
