Carson Wentz way up on Daniel Jeremiah's list of top NFL QBs for 2020

One of the best ways to start a virtual bar fight in 2020 is to reveal where you think Carson Wentz ranks among NFL quarterbacks.

To put it mildly, opinions are split.

Earlier this offseason, I ranked the NFL’s 32 starting quarterbacks and I put Wentz at No. 7, which is pretty high. But it’s nowhere near where Daniel Jeremiah has him.

The respected NFL Network analyst ranks Wentz at No. 3 heading into the 2020 season.

Here’s what Jeremiah said about Wentz:

It’s not just a hat tip to my buddy (Dan) Orlovsky, this is legitimate. Carson Wentz, he goes at No. 3 on the list here. He’s somebody, again, I think we saw what he could do in that Super Bowl year before he got hurt. He was on his way to winning MVP. The physicality he plays the position with, his ability to be able to pull through tackles, his ability to be able to stand firm in the pocket. I thought last year with all the injuries and issues they had at the receiver position, I thought you saw Carson Wentz elevate everybody’s play. I think he’s in the MVP discussion this year.

That’s high praise from one of the country’s top football analysts. Jeremiah is a former scout who worked for the Eagles, Ravens and Browns.

Here’s Jeremiah’s top eight quarterbacks for 2020:

8. Kyler Murray
7. Aaron Rodgers
6. Matthew Stafford
5. Deshaun Watson
4. Lamar Jackson
3. Carson Wentz
2. Russell Wilson
1. Patrick Mahomes

So Jeremiah has Wentz over the reigning NFL MVP, which is … a tough sell for me.

And you’ll notice the absence of Drew Brees on this list. Maybe Jeremiah expects a big drop in his play — eventually Brees will age — but Brees was pretty good last season.

Still, the point of this whole thing is to say that Wentz is pretty good. Is he the third best quarterback in the NFL? I value Jeremiah’s opinion but I don’t think so. Hopefully this will get settled on the field this fall.

The debate rages on.
