We already took a look at the history of the 21st pick in the NFL draft, but now let’s take a look at No. 53.

The Eagles have had the 53rd pick three times in the modern era and all three times they have used it on a running back, including last year:

2019: Miles Sanders
2009: LeSean McCoy
1980: Perry Harrington

The Eagles won’t use No. 53 on a running back this year, but they have a chance to get a really good player. Here’s a look back at the last 20 years:

The Eagles took the Penn State running back last year and Sanders had a very promising rookie season, setting an Eagles rookie record with 1,327 yards from scrimmage. He also had six total touchdowns. After Jordan Howard went down, Sanders took over and projects to have a really good career. He’ll enter Year 2 as RB1 for the Eagles.

In two seasons, the North Carolina product has played in 21 games with six starts. The Bucs tried to move Stewart to safety before the 2019 season but that plan failed and they moved him back to nickel corner. Stewart missed some time with injury in 2019 and played in just 10 games after playing in just 11 as a rookie.

Once thought to be a first-round pick out of Florida, Tabor lasted just two years in Detroit (22 games played) before they released him at final cuts before 2019. He spent his entire third season on the 49ers’ practice squad and his NFL career has been a big disappointment so far.

Cravens was drafted as a linebacker but played safety during his brief NFL career. He played in 11 games as a rookie but then didn’t play in 2017 as he contemplated retirement. In 2018, he returned to play five games with the Broncos. The Broncos released him before last season.

In four seasons with the Bengals, the former Oregon Duck played in 48 games and started 12. But after his rookie contract expired, he tried to switch positions, to tight end, and was with the Bills for a short time in the offseason.

This one worked out pretty well for the Packers. They took the Fresno State receiver and he has blossomed into a three-time Pro Bowler. In six seasons, he has 431 catches for 5,194 yards and 44 touchdowns. He’s under contract in Green Bay for two more seasons.

The Estonian-born Hunt had a great combine to get drafted this high but but had 1 1/2 sacks in his first four years. With the Colts, he’s found a little more success over the past three seasons, but in 2019 played all 16 games without a sack. He is currently a free agent.

The Penn State defensive lineman played three seasons with the Bengals and part of the 2016 season with the Texans. He played in a total of 33 NFL games and had 1/2 a sack. Still retired from the NFL and hasn’t played since that 2016 season. His daughter, Leah, became an inspiration in her fight against cancer. They recently celebrated Leah’s being cancer free for five years.

The big DT from New Zealand put up an incredible 49 bench press reps at the 2011 combine before getting drafted out of Oregon State. He played in 55 games with 40 starts over four years with the Bears. He then spent time in Washington, Cleveland and Dallas. He decided to retire in the middle of the 2017 season. He had 14 total sacks in seven seasons with a high of 6.0 in 2014, his final season with the Bears.

In three seasons in New England, Cunningham played in 36 games with 14 starts for the Patriots and then spent time with the Jets. He was suspended for a PED offense and in 2015 was placed on probation in a revenge porn incident. He played in just two games after leaving the Patriots. Carlos Dunlap and Sean Lee were taken in the two spots after Cunningham. Oops.

This one worked out pretty well for the Eagles. Before Chip Kelly traded him away after the 2014 season, McCoy became the Eagles’ all-time leading rusher with 6,792 yards. He also scored 54 total touchdowns in six years. Amazingly, he made the same number of Pro Bowls with the Bills as he did with the Eagles (three apiece). But his only two All-Pro seasons came with the Eagles in 2011 and 2013.

The receiver from the University of Texas played just two NFL seasons. He caught just seven passes for 69 yards in a total of 20 games in 2008 and 2009. Sweed tore his Achilles during minicamp in 2010 and didn’t play for the Steelers again. Last year, Sweed reportedly sued the NCAA, claiming negligence. Sweed said he has brain disorders as a result from college concussions.

Wright came out of UNLV and spent his first four years in Cleveland as a starter for the Browns. He then played for the Lions, Bucs and 49ers. In all, Wright’s career lasted seven seasons. He played in 92 games with 81 starts and had 15 interceptions, 2 touchdowns and 72 pass breakups. He retired in 2014.

The Cowboys already had Jason Witten when they took Fasano out of Notre Dame. Fasano spent two years in Dallas before he was traded to Miami, where his production picked up. He never became a Pro Bowl player but Fasano played a total of 12 seasons in the NFL for four teams. He ended up with 299 catches for over 3,200 yards and 36 touchdowns.

The Oklahoma lineman suffered from knee injuries and never really had any kind career. His rookie season ended with a knee injury in training camp and he played in just two NFL games. Six picks after the Ravens drafted Cody, the Falcons took defensive end Jonathan Babineaux, who played 12 seasons in Atlanta.

Boulware’s career got off to an incredibly hot start. In 2004, he started just four games but played in all 16 and had five interceptions. He stared all 16 the next season and added another four to give him nine interceptions in his first two NFL seasons. Boulware even picked up an interception off of Ben Roethlisberger in Super Bowl XL. But he spent just one more season in Seattle before he was traded to Houston for Jason Babin in 2007. He played in 16 games for Houston that season. In 2008, he went to Minnesota but landed on IR and never played again.

The linebacker from Michigan had a six-year NFL career and spent the first five with the Jets. Overall, he played in 79 games with 57 NFL starts. From 2005-07, he played in 48 games and started 46 for the Jets and had 168 solo tackles in those three years. Hobson was a solid player but Arizona grabbed Anquan Boldin with the very next pick.

Walker, a huge 6-8, 360-pound tackle from Cal, played nine years in the NFL — a total of 120 games and 82 starts. He played five years in Oakland, then two in Buffalo and then finished his career with two more years in Oakland.

In three seasons for the Cowboys, Carter played and started 31 games. He was the full-time starter for the 2003 season, when he led the Cowboys to a 10-6 record, but he also threw 17 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. The former baseball player and Georgia QB didn’t do the job of replacing Troy Aikman and spent his final NFL season in 2004 as the Jets’ backup, but got to start three games.

Taken out of Ole Miss, Wade became a starter during his rookie season with the Dolphins and went on to have an eight-year NFL career. He played in 99 career games with 96 starts for the Dolphins, Texans and Redskins.
