Week 8 NFL power rankings: Eagles tumble further in NFC

Share

The Eagles have lost by a total of 45 points to the Vikings and Cowboys in back-to-back weeks. They have rightfully taken a tumble in the NFC power rankings:

1. Saints (6-1) Last week: 2
Still without Drew Brees and then without Alvin Kamara, the Saints went into Chicago and came away with a 36-25 win. Sean Payton is my obvious frontrunner for Coach of the Year. And now Brees is nearing a return.

2. 49ers (6-0) Last week: 1
The sloppy field conditions at FedEx Field made for a gross game. Give the Niners credit for the 9-0 shutout, but they’re probably hoping they don’t play in a game like that again for a long time.

3. Packers (6-1) Last week: 4
After losing to the Eagles in Week 4, the Packers have rattled off three straight wins, including Sunday’s 42-24 win over the Raiders. Aaron Rodgers threw for five touchdowns and ran for another; it’s almost like that guy is pretty good.

4. Vikings (5-2) Last week: 5
In the last two weeks, the Vikings beat the Eagles by 18 points and the Lions by 12. They should be 6-2 after they play Washington this weekend.

5. Seahawks (5-2) Last week: 3
Tough 30-16 loss for the Seahawks at home against a really good Ravens team. Russell Wilson didn’t have a good performance against that Baltimore defense and the Ravens ran for nearly 200 yards.

6. Panthers (4-2) Last week: 6
The Panthers enjoyed their bye week, but are still one of the biggest surprises in the NFL. They’ve won four straight since Cam Newton got hurt. They might have a tough time catching New Orleans in the NFC South, but they’re definitely in the mix for a wild-card spot.

7. Rams (4-3) Last week: 7
In their first game since the Jalen Ramsey trade, the Rams took down the lowly Falcons 37-10. The problem for the Rams is that they’re still behind the 49ers and Seahawks in their own division.

8. Cowboys (4-3) Last week: 11
Dallas was reeling in a big way, but got a 37-10 win over the Eagles to take over first place in the NFC East. With the help of two early takeaways, the Cowboys suffocated the Eagles and are in the driver’s seat of the weakest division in the NFC.

9. Bears (3-3) Last week: 9
The Bears let the Saints come to town and beat them by 11 points. While the Bears haven’t had the start they wanted, they started last year with a 3-3 record and then won nine of 10 down the stretch to get into the playoffs.

10. Eagles (3-4) Last week: 8
The Eagles went to Dallas with a chance to take over in the NFC East and were completely embarrassed by their biggest rival. On top of it, there has been plenty of dysfunction and distractions. They aren’t even through their tough stretch yet.

11. Lions (2-3-1) Last week: 10
Detroit lost to the Vikings, 42-30, and has now lost two tough games coming out of its early Week 5 bye. The Lions lost to the Packers last week. They might be an OK team, but they’re having trouble in their own division.

12. Cardinals (3-3-1) Last week: 12
After starting with an 0-3-1 record, Arizona has rattled off three straight wins. But it has done it against the Bengals, Falcons and Giants. The Cardinals are the best of the bad teams, which only hurts their draft status.

13. Buccaneers (2-4) Last week: 13
The Bucs were on their bye last week. They’ll come out of it with games in Tennessee and Seattle before a winnable game against the Cardinals.

14. Giants (2-5) Last week: 14
That Daniel Jones magic was short-lived. After their two wins, the Giants have dropped three straight. In those three losses, Jones has three touchdowns, five interceptions and a passer rating of 60.8.

15. Falcons (1-6) Last week: 15
The Eagles’ loss to the Falcons looks worse each week. Atlanta has now lost five straight and have to face the Seahawks before the bye week. The Falcons are going to be 1-7 and Dan Quinn probably isn’t going to make it through this.

16. Redskins (1-6) Last week: 16
Even with a hand from sloppy weather and a sloppy field, the Redskins couldn’t get a win. Now, they’re at Minnesota and at Buffalo before their bye week. They’re going to coast through the rest of this miserable season with an interim head coach. Heck, since they already played the Dolphins, they could lose out.
