TRADE RUMORS

Schefter explains Eagles' pursuit of Ngakoue before trade

TRADE RUMORS

We've officially reached football month, but that doesn't mean NFL teams are done making league-shaking trades. And where there are trades, there are trade rumors.

ESPN's Adam Schefter joined 97.5 The Fanatic on Wednesday morning to chat about the Eagles, and at one point the conversation rolled around to Yannick Ngakoue, who was tenuously linked to the Birds all offseason before the Jaguars traded him to Minnesota.

Were the Eagles ever really a threat to trade for the All-Pro defensive end?

Here's what Schefter heard about the Eagles' pursuit of Ngakoue:

"It was nothing more than that phone call. They may have had a conversation, but it never got anywhere with Philadelphia. Philadelphia was never a viable landing spot, never got into the thick of it, if you will.

"I think at one point Jacksonville called the Eagles, and they said, 'We love the guy, but we're not going to do it' kind of thing."

Ah. Well then.

To be honest, this isn't too surprising. Ngakoue may have hinted at *his* interest in a trade to Philadelphia, and we all know that Howie Roseman loves to build his teams along the trenches.

But the kind of draft pick capital the Eagles would've had to give up for Ngakoue, combined with the money they would then have to pay him - and all of this at a time when the team is trying to save cap space for future seasons - simply made it a nearly impossible fit.

I think Roseman made the right decision to sit this one out. The Eagles' defensive line is already a strength, the team's talent evaluators are excited about a young, cost-effective piece in Josh Sweat, and they didn't want to throw a wrench into the cap situation.

Luckily, the Eagles don't face the Vikings in the regular season this year, which means Eagles fans won't have to watch him torch a banged-up offensive line and spend an entire Sunday afternoon thinking "What if?"
