Chargers reportedly hire top candidate before Eagles can interview him

The Chargers are reportedly hiring Brandon Staley as their next head coach, which means the Eagles won’t even get an opportunity to interview the Rams’ defensive coordinator.

The latest from NFL Network:

Staley, 38, was reportedly scheduled to meet with the Eagles on Monday for an interview, but that obviously won’t happen now. The Eagles on Sunday had a lengthy interview with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, one of several candidates with whom they have already spoken.

Staley was considered a top candidate after his defense was the top-ranked unit in the NFL this season. The Rams were the league leaders in points allowed and yards allowed.

He spent just one season with the Rams but before 2020, Staley coached under Vic Fangio in Denver and Chicago.

The interesting part of this hire is that Brian Daboll was reportedly the favorite for the Chargers, which means he’s still available. NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark reported last week that the Eagles showed interest in Daboll. So perhaps Philadelphia remains a landing spot for him.

The problem, of course, is that the Bills are still alive in the playoffs after beating the Ravens on Saturday. The Chiefs are also still alive after taking down the Browns on Sunday. The Eagles have requested to interview Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy but those interviews have to wait until after teams are eliminated. That means the Eagles’ coaching search might not end anytime soon.

And while it’s not official, it sounds like Dan Campbell is expected to be the Lions’ next coach, which means there are just two openings left.

Jaguars: Urban Meyer

Jets: Robert Saleh

Falcons: Arthur Smith

Chargers: Brandon Staley

Lions: Dan Campbell
