Eagles request interview with popular defensive coordinator

The Eagles have formally requested permission from the 49ers to interview defensive coordinator Robert Saleh for their head coaching opening, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Saleh, one of the hottest head coaching names in the league this offseason, becomes the second known candidate for the job that opened Monday when the team fired head coach Doug Pederson.

The team has reportedly already reached out to Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley.

According to NFL Network’s Michael Silver, wherever he does ultimately land as a head coach, Saleh plans to bring 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur with him from the 49ers as his offensive coordinator. LaFleur is the younger brother of Packers head coach Matt LeFleur and was with Saleh in Atlanta with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan under Dan Quinn.

Saleh, the 49ers’ defensive coordinator since 2017, has already interviewed or has formal interviews scheduled with the Jets, Falcons and Lions and is also reportedly a candidate for the Jaguars and Chargers openings. He reportedly has a second interview scheduled Monday with the Jets.

Saleh, 41, spent 2005 through 2010 with the Texans, then three years as a quality control assistant with the Seahawks before getting his first position coach job under Gus Bradley with the Jaguars in 2014.

Over the last two years, the 49ers rank first in yards allowed, 10th in points allowed, first in passing yards allowed and ninth in takeaways.
