The Eagles bucked the traditional NFL offseason playbook on Monday, firing head coach Doug Pederson a full week after Black Monday, the classic day to fire your head coach and start your search for a replacement.
On top of already being an unusual approach, it doesn't sound at all like this was Jeffrey Lurie's plan, and now as the Eagles try to figure out what the future of the organization looks like, their offseason process is already reportedly in chaos.

On Tuesday, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo discussed the Eagles' first head coach interview requests for Robert Saleh, Todd Bowles, and Arthur Smith, but from what Garafolo is hearing out of the Eagles' camp, things aren't exactly going smoothly:
"I don't get the sense that this team expected a coaching search to be happening right now, so they're kind of scrambling right now.
"The requests are in for Robert Saleh and Todd Bowles right now [...] but I wouldn't look at it like, 'Oh, these are the targets,' because right now this team is just getting its feet underneath it as they start a coaching search, while six other teams are already deep into theirs. So I think there's a little bit of frustration on that part."
Ah, good. "Scrambling" and "frustration", two words you're definitely hoping to hear if you're an Eagles fan crossing your fingers and hoping for the best right now.

Even if parting ways with Doug Pederson was the correct decision for the Eagles, the way Jeffrey Lurie went about things was all wrong.
A week doesn't seem like a lot in the big picture, but there are crucial junctures of the NFL season when you can't afford to be indecisive or wait too long - Black Monday, free agency, the week of the NFL Draft, the hours after the roster cut-down deadline during the preseason - or your franchise can suffer.
That's what happened here. Lurie waited a week, which can be an eternity in a coaching search, and now the Eagles are "scrambling" while teams like the Jets have already interviewed multiple candidates and are whittling their lists down to finalists.
This is a bad look for the Eagles in the present, and if they don't get moving, this misstep could set the team back for years. What a mess.
