NFL insider has bad news on Wentz trade value as talks continue

Surprisingly, we've reached a full week after the Super Bowl and Carson Wentz is still a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

After trade talks sounded red-hot in early February, things cooled off last week and all sides "took a deep breath" to re-asses where talks stood.

Apparently, that wasn't great for the Eagles.

In his MMQB column Monday, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer chimed in with his latest understanding of where the Wentz trade talks stand:

"The market’s not strong for Wentz...

"[...]

"Ultimately, I think GM Howie Roseman’s goal, in asking for so much, was to come away with a 1 and something else. At this point, I don’t think he gets a first-rounder for Wentz at all, without some strings (maybe a salary dump or picks going back) attached."

No first-round pick in return? That's not ideal, and it sounds like things are moving backwards in terms of potential returns, which is the wrong direction.

Let's walk it back six days ago, to when NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was discussing return on a potential Wentz deal on The Rich Eisen Show on Peacock:

"I think they'll be able to get a first-rounder. That would be very good, considering the way Carson played. I just don't know what levels of 'more' they're going to be able to get."

So in less than a week, talks have cooled and we've gone from "I think they'll be able to get a first-rounder" to "I don't think he gets a first-rounder for Wentz at all."

Cool, cool. Really good stuff.

There were some fans who didn't see the rush in trading Wentz, considering the Eagles don't have to make the move until early March in order to save money with Wentz's contract situation.

But the closer we get to early March, the less and less leverage Roseman has in any trade talks with the Bears and Colts, as they know he has an impending deadline and they're willing to let him sweat it out. With free agency and the draft on the horizon, neither team is in a rush to fix their QB position, but the Eagles are.

There's still time, and a Wentz trade could happen any day now, but it sounds like Roseman has sort of misplayed his hand here, and it could cost the franchise - quite literally.
