Pederson reportedly eyeing one NFL head coaching job

Doug Pederson has spent the past 11 months out of coaching, but as the former Eagles head coach and Super Bowl champ gears up for what he hopes will be another shot, it sounds like he already has his eyes on a possible opportunity.

Less than a week after Urban Meyer's ouster in Jacksonville, Pederson is reportedly "interested" in interviewing for the Jaguars job, CBS Sports' insider Jason La Canfora reported Sunday.

Here's what La Canfora is hearing from his sources:

"Former Super Bowl winning head coach Doug Pederson, who has used his year out of the coaching ranks to study the league and mull potential opportunities, would very much be interested in interviewing with Jacksonville, sources said. Pederson has already secured assurances from the men who would comprise his staff about their willingness to join him, and Khan may prefer to hire a coach with significant NFL head coaching experience after the Meyer debacle."

Since Pederson isn't with a team right now, I'd imagine his sources are either Pederson himself, Pederson's agent Bob Lamonte, or someone with the Jaguars already trying to drum up interest in the position.

And it's honestly not much of a surprise that Pederson is "interested in interviewing" for the position; when you're trying to return to the head coach ranks, you want to be in the running for every job that's available. There are only 32 openings.

But I still don't think Jacksonville is the right gig for Pederson, even though I believe the Jaguars will be extremely interested in him. I explained my reasoning last week, including outlining Jacksonville's status as a straight-up bad organization:

"We need to remember that [Urban Meyer] was enabled by the people above him in the Jacksonville organizational structure, a group of people who saw fit to hire Meyer in the first place and then let him continue to besmirch their franchise for months after it was clear he was wrong for the job.

"Meyer tried to hire an assistant coach who was fired over allegations of racism, yet Meyer kept his job. Meyer was caught up in a social media firestorm after not flying home with the team following a loss and winding up in a compromising situation at a bar, yet Meyer kept his job. It took Meyer fudging black-and-white facts about a game he'd just coached, combined with a story of him kicking a player, for Shad Khan to finally fire the guy.

"The Jaguars were a laughingstock in the NFL before Meyer arrived, and they'll be one after he departs, because the organization is poorly-run. Why would Pederson want to get involved in that?"

I won't blame Doug if he gets in line for the chance to build with Trevor Lawrence and live in sunny Florida, but I still think he should look elsewhere for work next year.
