The Eagles acquired second-year linebacker/defensive Genard Avery from the Browns Monday in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick.
Avery played linebacker for the Browns but the Eagles are calling him a defensive end at 6-0 and 250 pounds.
To make room on the 53-man roster for Avery, the Eagles released defensive tackle Bruce Hector.
Avery had a promising rookie for the Browns last year as a rookie fifth-round draft pick out of Memphis.
He played in all 16 games, starting five, and averaged 43 snaps per game along with 90 special teams snaps. He had 4 1/2 sacks, five tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hits and looked like a solid prospect for the Browns.
But he barely played this year. He got into only two of the Browns’ first eight games and played only five snaps on defense and none on special teams.

Avery was active only for a Week 3 game against the Rams and on Sunday against the Patriots.

The Eagles already have six defensive ends on the roster in starters Derek Barnett and Brandon Graham, veteran Vinny Curry and youngsters Josh Sweat, Daeshon Hall and Shareef Miller.
Because Avery comes here via trade, the Eagles assume the remaining years of his contract. He’s earning $570,000 this year and due to earn $660,000 next year and $750,000 in 2021 on the final year of his four-year, $2.75 million rookie contract.
As for Hector, he was only on the 53-man roster for four days.
Hector played in eight games for the Eagles last year as an undrafted rookie and played 82 snaps on defense.
They traded him to the Cards in August for Rudy Ford then signed him to the practice squad after the Cards released him as part of their final roster cutdown.
Hector was one of three defensive ends who played for the Eagles Sunday in Buffalo who began the week on various practice squads. He played 30 snaps to 12 for Anthony Rush and nine for Albert Huggins.
