Surprising news for the Eagles' Super Bowl MVP

Nick Foles’ 2020 season will start out the same way his 2013 Pro Bowl season and 2017 Super Bowl MVP season started.

On the bench.

Foles, who has battled Mitch Tribusky throughout training camp for the Bears' starting QB job, will begin the season backing up Trubisky, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday evening.

It comes as something of a surprise considering the Bears traded a 4th-round pick to the Jaguars for Foles and gave him $21 million guaranteed as part of a three-year, $21 million extension after declining to exercise Trubisky’s option.

The decision was made by Bears head coach Matt Nagy, who was a quality control coach under Andy Reid with the Eagles in 2012, when Foles was a rookie with the Eagles.

Foles, 31, replaced an injured Michael Vick six weeks into 2013 when he had his record-setting 27-touchdown, 2-interception season with the Eagles and made his only Pro Bowl. He replaced Carson Wentz four years later 14 weeks into the season and led the Eagles to the Super Bowl championship.

His only opening-day starts came in 2014 for the Eagles, 2015 for the Rams, 2018 for the Eagles when Wentz was still out and last year for the Jaguars.

Trubisky, the second pick in the 2017 draft, is 23-18 in three years with the Bears with an 85.8 passer rating. In his only career playoff appearance, the Bears lost to the Eagles at Soldier Field in a 2018 wild-card game. That was Foles’ last win as an Eagle.

In his career - including the playoffs - Foles is 24-13 with a 94.0 passer rating as an Eagle. He’s 5-11 with a 76.7 passer rating with the Rams, Chiefs and Jaguars.

Foles has only started 13 regular-season games over the last four years and has never started more than 11 games in a season.
