Eagles cut 5 players, including former draft pick

Shelton Gibson, the Eagles’ 5th-round pick in 2017, was among five players the Eagles released on Sunday.

The moves left the Eagles’ roster at 82 with training camp scheduled to begin this week. With no preseason games and pared-down training camps, teams are not expected to carry the maximum 90 players on their preseason rosters.

Gibson caught three passes in two seasons with the Eagles and spent last year on the Browns’ practice squad before rejoining the Eagles before the playoff game against the Seahawks.

His only career highlight is a 48-yard catch from Carson Wentz in a game against the Vikings in 2018.

He was actually responsible for the Eagles’ longest play of the game, drawing a 39-yard pass interference on T. Flowers on a pass from Josh McCown. He only played two snaps on offense in the game along with 11 snaps on special teams.

Gibson’s departure leaves the Eagles with 16 players on the roster who played in the Super Bowl.

The Eagles also released a receiver, Marcus Green, who spent all last year on their practice squad.

Even without Gibson and Green, the Eagles have 11 wide receivers on the roster, including a number of youngsters - rookies Jalen Reagor, John Hightower and Quez Watkins, 22-year-old Deontay Burnett and 23-year-old J.J. Arcega-Whiteside.

Another interesting cut was defensive end Daeshon Hall, a former 3rd-round pick of the Panthers who spent 2018 and 2019 with the Eagles, playing in 12 games and recording 1 1/2 sacks. Hall played 67 defensive snaps and 77 on special teams the last two years.

Hall tore his ACL on the final play of this past regular season. The Eagles did not announce an injury settlement with Hall.

Also released was defensive tackle Albert Huggins, who played 44 defensive snaps in four games last year. The Eagles waived Huggins last November, and he spent five days with the Patriots before rejoining the Eagles on the practice squad.

The Eagles have a lot of depth at defensive tackle behind Fletcher Cox, Malik Jackson and Javon Hargrave, with Anthony Rush, Raequan Williams, Hassan Ridgeway and Bruce Hector.

Cornerback Tremon Smith was also released. Green, the Falcons’ 6th-round pick last year, spent all of last year on the Eagles’ practice squad. Smith, the Chiefs’ 6th-round pick in 2018, also spent time on the Eagles’ practice squad last year. He’s played in 22 games with the Chiefs and Packers.
