Scenes and highlights from 2nd annual Carson Wentz AO1 softball game

Share

Update: At the 2nd annual event, 15,000 fans showed up and raised $500,000. In two years, the event has raised $1.35 million.

Carson Wentz and the AO1 Foundation had so much sucess doing their inagural softball game last year, that there was no doubt they were doing it again. I covered it last year (see story) and I'm back for more.

9:51 p.m.: Wow, the offense rallies and wins in walk-off fashion, 17-16.

8:45 p.m.: Defense flexing its muscle.

8:35 p.m.: Through four innings, it's Offense 7, Defense 5.

8:12 p.m.: I just looked up and it's 4-4. I don't know how that happened.

8:08 p.m.: This is an ... interesting game.

8:03 p.m.: Dallas Goedert and Richard Rodgers both hit home runs. Rodgers crushed his to the actual stands.

But the real news: Nate Sudfeld's walk-up song is Baby Shark.

7:54 p.m.: In the top of the second inning, Sidney Jones went yard to give the defense a 3-0 lead. But DeSean redeemed himself, making two nice catches in the outfield.

7:40 p.m.: DeSean Jackson's second stint as an Eagle is off to an inauspicious start as he drops a routine fly ball. E9.

7:37 p.m.: KAMUUUUU! Home run for the linebacker. Two-run shot in the top of the first inning. He flips the bat accordingly. Then Jake Elliott goes oppo. Defense is up 3-0.

7:32 p.m.: OK, I'm impressed.

7:24 p.m.: The teams are getting announced. Defensive players went first. Then the offense. Big cheer for DeSean Jackson. But the biggest cheer was reserved for Wentz last.

7:19 p.m.: Just got back to my seat. To answer a gentelman's question from earlier, yes, there is sausage. I got a sausage, peppers and onions sandwich. And a water. See! I'm healthy.

6:56 p.m.: Richard Rodgers takes down Jake Elliott in the finals of the home run derby. If they scored by distance it wouldn't be close. He crushed many into the stands.

6:55 p.m.: Our John Clark tells me that they're not playing but Malcolm Jenkins and Torrey Smith are here. Jenkins has been skipping Eagles OTAs.

6:51 p.m.: Jason Kelce isn't a great softball player, but he's dressed pretty well.

6:44 p.m.: Richard Rodgers is cranking home runs into the seats. Pretty impressive with a softball.

6:39 p.m.: Corey Clement hasn't been practicing as he comes back from a knee injury but he's in the home run derby. He must be feeling pretty good.

6:30 p.m.: The home run derby is under way. The 10 contestants: Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Nate Sudfeld, Corey Clement, Richard Rodgers, Stefen Wisniewski, Jake Elliott, Brandon Graham, Jason Kelce

6:23 p.m.: A guy asks me if the sausage vendor is open. I don't know, but I hope so. Might hit that up soon.

6:16 p.m.: I do a live hit on Quick Slants with Gunner and Barrett. I picked the offense to win tonight. We'll see if I'm right.

5:48 p.m.: Wentz holds a pre-game press conference, thanking everyone for their support of his event and foundation.

A few notes:

- The sports complex in Haiti is coming along. The court is being laid this week and the turf field isn't far behind. Wentz says 15,000 kids will benefit from the complex. It will provide them meals in addition to support.

- The food truck, Thy Kingdom Crumb, is doing well. They have given out 8,000 meals in less than a year.

- The outdoor ministry is going well too. They took 10 kids on hunting trips. These kids from the Midweset have been through serious illnesses and the trips are an escape for them. One of them, Logan from North Dakota, was in attendance. "Kids like this inspire me," Wentz says.

- Wentz is asked about his fit in the city of Philadelphia three years in. He says the city is a perfect fit for his personality.

- Wentz is excited to see what kind of reaction DeSean Jackson gets tonight. He knows it's going to be fun.

- In addition to the food truck, an ice cream cart was donated, but Wentz won't divulge the name just yet.

My suggestion: Thy Kingdom Cone

5:17 p.m.: I enter the media entrance and make my way up to the press box. But first ... another photo.

4:57 p.m.: I leave the NBC Sports Philadelphia offices in the Wells Fargo Center and head to Citizens Bank Park for the event, but stop to take a few photos along the way. There were already guys sellling unlicensed merchandise outside. And plenty of fans lining up to get in and to get food from Wentz's Thy Kingdom Crumb food truck.
