The Eagles are promoting assistant defensive line coach Phillip Daniels to fill their vacant defensive line coach position, according to a league source.
Daniels will replace Chris Wilson, who held the job for the previous three seasons. The Eagles and Wilson parted ways earlier this offseason.
Daniels is the second internal promotion this offseason. Assistant receivers coach Carson Walch took over as receivers coach, taking over for Gunter Brewer after just one season.
Daniels, 45, has been the Eagles’ assistant DL coach for the past three seasons. Before that, he was the director of player development for the Washington Redskins in 2012.
A fourth-round pick in 1996 out of Georgia, Daniels had a long and productive NFL career. He played 14 seasons for three different teams. Daniels, known for his workout prowess, last played in the NFL for Washington in 2010.
Here’s an update on all the Eagles’ coaching moves so far:
- Daniels takes over as DL coach, replacing Wilson.
- Walch takes over as WRs coach, replacing Brewer, who went to Louisville.
- The Eagles hired Roy Istvan from Keiser University as their assistant OL coach. He has a history with Jeff Stoutland and will replace Eugene Chung.
- Former QB G.J. Kinne has been added to the staff as an offensive assistant.
- Former Dolphins defensive coordinator Matt Burke has been added to the staff in an advisory role.
- The Eagles are reportedly expected to bring back Joe Pannunzio, according to AL.com. Pannunzio had been coaching in Alabama, but was with the Eagles’ front office in 2015 and 2016. It’s unclear what role he’ll have.
