Like most of Andy Reid’s former players, Terrell Owens was thrilled to see Big Red finally get a chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy a few months ago.

“Honestly, I was ecstatic,” Owens said in an interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark. “I’ve kept in touch with Andy Reid ever since I left (Philadelphia).”

The last time the Hall of Fame receiver played for Reid was during the 2005 season before the relationship between Owens and the Eagles really soured. Despite what went down in Philly, Owens never lost his love for Reid.

“I love Andy,” Owens said. “Andy is the best coach that I have ever had.”

And Owens tried to play for Reid again. Owens last played in an NFL game in 2010 as a member of the Bengals but after Reid went to Kansas City, Owens tried to make a comeback with his former coach.

It seems like the Chiefs were at least somewhat interested. Here’s the story from T.O.’s mouth:

When I was trying to get back in the league I had contacted him about obviously rejoining him. I talked to John Dorsey, who was the GM at one point in time. I don’t know how close it was to me rejoining him but I did talked to John Dorsey some years back. John was basically asking me why did I still want to play so I was sending videos of myself working out. Again, the concussion that he came up with as to why they didn’t sign me is going to be mind-blowing. He said my age. That was it. That was it. Again, it blows my mind to today. Everything that I showed him video-wise, me running routes, things of that nature. Again, my track record really kind of speaks for itself. That was his honest take back from everything I had sent him and our conversations, that he was scared of my age. This was about four or five years ago.

Dorsey was the GM in Kansas City from 2013-16, so that’s the time frame we’re talking about. The earliest this could have happened was in 2013, when Owens would have turned 40 during the season. Owens’ former teammate Jerry Rice played until he was 42 in 2004.

It’s fun to think about Owens playing for the Chiefs and for Big Red again but it never happened. It’s fun to hear T.O. tell that story as well as the Andy Reid tights story to Clark. Give a listen above.
