Eagles

Now it’s officially official.

The NFL has made a scoring change from the Eagles’ 16-15 wild-card win over the Bears at Soldier Field. Treyvon Hester has been credited with a field goal block.

The Eagles’ rotational defensive tackle just got his fingertips on the football after it left Cody Parkey’s foot on a 43-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game for the Bears and sent the Eagles packing.

It’s the first FG block in Eagles postseason history, Elias Sports confirmed.

I’ve watched the kick about a thousand times so far and it’s clear that after Hester gets his hand on the ball, it slightly changes its rotation, but then corrects itself. It was a great play by Hester to slice through the line.

We have no way to know if the kick was going to go in or go wide left if Hester doesn’t touch it. But he did touch it and then it double-doinked and the Eagles flew home from Chicago with a road playoff win.

There were two blocked field goals in the NFL on Sunday, but before then, there hadn’t been a blocked field goal in a playoff game since 2015.

After the game, a bunch of Hester’s teammates were trying to get the word out that their young teammate got his fingertips on the ball.

When asked about newcomers who have been making a difference this season, Doug Pederson made a funny on Monday afternoon.

“Yeah, you can go all the way back to Treyvon Hester who we activated early in the season off the practice squad and then has a big hand in the game last night,” Pederson said, drawing eye rolls and some genuine appreciation from the crowd. “You like that?”

Hester played 12 snaps on defense against the Bears and just seven on special teams. But he made the most of it and left Chicago as a hero.

The Eagles signed Hester to their practice squad on Sept. 7 after he was cut by the Raiders, who drafted him in the seventh-round out of Toledo in 2017. After a little less than a month on the practice squad, Hester was promoted to the active roster on Oct. 2.

Now, he’s earned a place in Eagles history.
