Flyers, Penguins linked together again in these odds

Nothing like a heated rivalry to bring out some snarl on the ice.

The 2020-21 season should see plenty of it as the Flyers will play all their division foes eight times each during the 56-game regular-season schedule because of COVID-19. The league’s hope is to get back to a normal season for the 2021-22 campaign.

Friendly reminder that the East Division is composed of the Flyers, Penguins, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Bruins, Capitals and Sabres. The top four teams in the division will qualify for the postseason.

Here’s a look at the odds to make the playoffs, per NBC Sports' betting partner PointsBet.

  • Bruins -300
  • Flyers -180
  • Penguins -180
  • Capitals -150
  • Islanders -115
  • Rangers +125
  • Sabres +210
  • Devils +300

It feels like the Flyers and Penguins are always attached to each other. The two rivals will square off Wednesday in the season opener and both have odds of -180 ($10 bet to win $5.56) to be playing postseason hockey. Ironically, if these odds shook out the way they are lined up at this moment, then the two organizations would be meeting in the NHL’s first round.

An odd trend, and one Flyers fans hope comes to an end, is the team has alternated missing and making the playoffs in each of the last eight seasons.

In order to make the playoffs, the Flyers obviously have to play well in the regular season. The over/under on points for the orange and black is listed at 65.5. Again, that’s based out of 112 points (56-game schedule).

This season, just like last season, will be unique ... just expect lots of chippy play as the teams get to know each other quite well over the next several months.
