2020 NHL draft profile: Will Flyers add more RW depth with Jacob Perreault?

Share

The NHL draft lottery that typically takes place early April tends to spark the conversation of prospects and when they will selected.

With the 2019-20 season currently suspended, there’s a high level of uncertainty for when the lottery will occur and where teams will be slotted in the draft order — or when the draft itself will even be held. Still, it’s important to start looking at possible players the Flyers could take in the draft.

As of now, the Flyers hold the 26th overall pick — and today kicks off our draft profiles of possible, viable selections.

Jacob Perreault

Position: Right wing
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 198
Shoots: Right
Team: Sarina Sting (OHL)

Scouting report

Through 57 games in 2019-20, Perreault led the Sting in goals (39) and was fourth in points (70). He currently has the blueprint that will allow him to mold into a true sniper one day, having a strong shot and release.

Creativity and strong instincts with the puck in the offensive zone are what allow him to stand out on the ice — but it can also land him in trouble, as he has a difficult time managing in the other two zones, especially neutral.

The 17-year-old winger took everyone by surprise when it came to his skating skills, which are still consumed with mixed reviews. He dominated drills at the CHL Top Prospects Game, finishing in the top three in six different categories, some of the most impressive being the 30M forward skate, reaction time and weave agility — where he placed first.

The biggest concern is his ability to translate those skills to his actual game.

Fit with Flyers

The Flyers are in a situation they haven’t found themselves in for quite some time — and that’s the fact there is not one dire need going into this draft. There’s balance across all positions and prospects, so that opens the opportunity to take a risk with Perreault.

He is a young talent that should only continue to improve in years to come. While it might take a while longer to develop, if he can hone in on his potential, there’s a chance he can make a substantial impact down the road.

Everyone wanted the Flyers to draft a sniper in the first round last year — this time around, Perreault could be their best option for the future.
