7 possible candidates to replace Ron Hextall as Flyers' GM
Where do the Philadelphia Flyers go from here?
If the Flyers want to make a rather easy and seamless decision moving forward, then why not go with the architect of the two-time Stanley Cup champion who’s currently serving the organization as a senior advisor.
The Flyers have a long history of promoting personnel within the organization and Lombardi previously served as a scout from 2003-06. (AP Images)
The prototypical Flyers defenseman whose career was cut short in 2012, Pronger has served as a senior advisor to the Florida Panthers, a position he’s held since the summer of 2017, working with the organization’s younger talent, most notably Aaron Ekblad.
Pronger has expressed an interest in a general manager position, and his ideology of constructing a roster appears to be in line with team president Paul Holmgren. (AP Images)
It’s an extreme long shot but Yzerman stepped down as GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning back in September as he couldn’t balance out the responsibilities of an NHL executive and that of a family man.
While many believe Yzerman will eventually take over for Ken Holland in Detroit, where his family has always resided, perhaps it’s worth kicking the tires for good measure. (USA Today Images)
Currently working with TSN as a hockey analyst, the one-time Flyers captain previously held the position of vice president of hockey operations for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as GM duties of their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
Poulin’s front office career started as a scout for the Anaheim Ducks from 2006-09. (AP Images)
The 51-year-old longtime NHL executive was relieved of his position as Wild general manager this past April after nine years on the job.
Prior to that, Fletcher spent three seasons as an assistant GM to Ray Shero in Pittsburgh, and prior to that, 10 years in a similar role with the expansion Florida Panthers. (AP Images)
If you’re looking for that up-and-coming executive who has paid his dues throughout the league, then Fitzgerald would be the injection of an outsider’s perspective the Flyers may be looking for.
Fitzgerald also served as an assistant general manager in Pittsburgh for six years before joining Ray Shero in a similar position with the New Jersey Devils. (AP Images)
The 54-year-old Zito is a very interesting GM prospect who has been a key piece to the Columbus Blue Jackets' organization, serving as GM of their AHL affiliate Lake Erie Monsters.
Zito’s hockey career started as an agent after he graduated from law school and his agency is one of the most respected in the hockey world. He represented former Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen and negotiated his six-year, $38 million contract with the Flyers. (USA Today Images)
