Capitals to be without key forward for games against Flyers this week

The Flyers will play the Capitals three times in the next week — three games that could go a long way toward playoff positioning in the tight East Division race.

Washington will not have a key forward for any of those games.

Veteran winger Tom Wilson has been suspended by the NHL for seven games for a hit on Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo Friday night.

Carlo’s head hit the boards and he laid on the ice for several minutes before being helped off. He spent the night in the hospital before being released.

Wilson has a history of questionable hits and was suspended four times in a 13-month span in 2017 and 2018. In spite of this, he didn’t fall under the league's Department of Player Safety parameters because he hasn’t been suspended in the last 18 months.

There was no penalty called on the play at the time, but the department ruled that Wilson’s hit should have been considered boarding, as Carlo was in a defenseless position and Wilson did little to minimize the impact.

The Flyers and Capitals will play Sunday night, Thursday night and Saturday night, with all three games at the Wells Fargo Center.
