Flyers make big move, trade multiple picks for DeAngelo

General manager Chuck Fletcher made a major move before Day 2 of the 2022 NHL draft even commenced.

The Flyers acquired defenseman Tony DeAngelo and a 2022 seventh-round pick in a trade with the Hurricanes. The club sent a 2024 second-round pick, 2023 third-round pick and 2022 fourth-round pick to Carolina.

DeAngelo, 26, was a restricted free agent this offseason. According to a report by The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, the Flyers have agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract extension with DeAngelo.

The Flyers needed to address their defense this offseason. They also needed insurance on Ryan Ellis, who is recovering from a multilayered injury in his pelvic region that cost him all but four games last season.

"I would think over the next month, we would start to get a pretty good picture as he continues to advance in his rehab protocols, both off the ice and on the ice," Fletcher said just over a week ago about the offseason decisions hinging on Ellis' recovery. "Is he still going forward? Are there any steps back? Does he stall at a certain step? This is all the uncertainty. ... I’m trying to be as completely transparent as I can be. There is certainly a path where it could go really well. But we'll just have to see."

After a controversial and abrupt finish to his time with the Rangers, DeAngelo saw his next chance in Carolina last season. He put up 51 points (10 goals, 41 assists) and a plus-30 rating in 64 games on a one-year, prove-it deal.

"We're very happy to add Tony to our team and I know he is very excited to join the Flyers," Fletcher said in a statement released by the team. "We did our due diligence and we strongly believe in Tony and his ability to help our team. He is a right-handed shot who moves the puck extremely well and will drive offense from the back end for us."

DeAngelo, a Sewell, New Jersey native, was waived by the Rangers in February 2021 after a reported altercation with former teammate Alexandar Georgiev. Via a story by NHL.com's Dan Rosen, Jeff Gorton, the Rangers' general manager at the time, said the reason for parting ways with the 2014 first-round pick came from a culmination of incidents. Prior to his time in New York, coming up as a younger player, DeAngelo had some past history of disruptive and inexcusable behavior.

With Rod Brind'Amour's Hurricanes, DeAngelo took advantage of his second chance.

“We got to know him before we got him," Brind’Amour said in April, via The Athletic's Arthur Staple. "That was where we did that. Once he showed up, he’s just one of the guys. It’s how he’s been since Day 1. I can’t say enough good things. We knew what kind of player he was; that was obvious. The stuff off the ice was just strange for me. I don’t get it. And I’ll just leave it at that."
